Worlds and Times

چکیده
There are many parallels between the role of possible worlds in modal logic and that of times in tense logic. But the similarities only go so far, and it is important to note where the two come apart. This paper argues that even though worlds and times play similar roles in the model theories of modal and tense logic, there is no tense analogue of the possible-worlds analysis of modal operators. An important corollary of this result is that presentism cannot be the tense analogue of actualism. forthcoming

Sleeping Beauty and the Dynamics of De Se Beliefs
In standard possible worlds semantics, propositions are sets of possible worlds. To believe a proposition is to believe that your world is one of the worlds in that set. So the proposition that there are extraterrestrials is the set of worlds in which there are extraterrestrials, and to believe that there are extraterrestrials is to believe that your world is a member of that set. A belief in a...

This article builds on Mannion and Exworthy’s account of the tensions between standardization and customization within health services to explore why these tensions exist. It highlights the limitations of explanations which root them in an expression of managerialism versus professionalism and suggests that each logic is embedded in a set of ontological, epistemological and moral commitments wh...
متن کاملTo Infinity and Not Beyond: Scaling Communication in Virtual Worlds with Meru
Virtual worlds seek to provide an online setting where users can interact in a shared environment. Popular virtual worlds such as Second Life and World of Warcraft, however, rely on share-nothing data and strict partitioning as much as possible. They translate a large world into many tiny worlds. This partitioning conflicts with the intended goal of a virtual world by greatly limiting interacti...
متن کاملType-theoretic logic with an operational account of intensionality
Classical intensional semantic representation languages, like Montague (1974)’s Intensional Logic (IL), do not accommodate fine-grained intensionality. Montague, following Carnap (1947), characterizes intensions as functions from worlds (indices of worlds and times) to denotations, and so reduces intensional identity to equivalence of denotation across possible worlds. As has frequently been no...
